FAQ
What makes HPC different from other chiropractic and Physical Therapy clinics? Our clinic differs from traditional chiropractic functions in that we offer only evidence-based treatment protocols. If the technique is not clinically proven by Physiotherapists, Chiropractic Physicians, or Medical Doctors, it is not offered in our practice. Further, we provide our patients with more than adjusting. Current medical research has proven that an integrated health care approach involving muscle and joint manipulation, rehabilitation, and therapeutic exercises offers patients the most effective and long-lasting results. Why should I see the doctors of Beachwood Chiropractic and not my family doctor for back or muscle pain? Unlike many facilities, we go beyond treating just the symptoms. We identify and treat the cause of your problem. The doctors of Beachwood Chiropractic have undergone extensive studies and specialized training in the fields of musculoskeletal anatomy, neurology, biomechanics, sports injuries, and rehabilitative exercise. As a result, when it comes to sudden or chronic injuries of the joints or muscles, the doctors of Beachwod are best suited to meet your needs. Aren't all Chiropractic Physicians the same? Our knowledge of anatomy and the body's mechanics coupled with our Motion Palpation Institute techniques provides us with the insight to know when a joint should be adjusted, when muscular or rehabilitative therapy is appropriate and when an integrated treatment program is necessary. For our patients, our comprehensive, evidence-based approach produces results in an efficient timeframe (with most of our patients excused from care between two and six visits depending on the complexity of their condition). Will I have to come back for a long time? How do I know when I have completed my treatment? What do the Physicians at Beachwood Chiropractic deal with? The physicians at Beachwood Chiropractic are neuromusculoskeletal specialists, focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with back pain, neck pain, and headaches, among other problems. We do not use medications or surgery as treatments, but rather utilize natural, hands-on methods along with exercise and lifestyle modification. Although most cases can be diagnosed through discussion of the problem and physical examination, we also utilize blood tests, MRI, CAT scans, X rays, and other diagnostic tests when necessary. The physicians at Beachwood Chiropractic work in cooperation with medical physicians and other practitioners to provide high quality, well-rounded care to each patient. What types of problems are treated at Beachwood Chiropractic? Back pain Neck pain Headaches Migraines TMJ pain and/or dysfunction Sciatica Pregnancy-related low back or leg pain Whiplash injuries Arthritis Shoulder, arm, and leg pain Work-related injuries Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Muscle tightness, weakness or imbalance Numbness and tingling Thoracic outlet syndrome What is the cracking noise that often occurs with manipulation? Do I have to have my back "cracked"? How long does chiropractic care take to work? Do you think people should come in regularly to have chiropractic check-ups? style='mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt'> Can you help with a pinched nerve? Yes. Pinched nerves in the neck or low back cause arm or leg symptoms such as numbness, tingling or weakness. We will perform the necessary examination to diagnose this condition. The first line of treatment includes ergonomic or lifting advice, physical medicine, and exercise. We will show you how to decrease inflammation through nutrition and herbs. About 20% of the time pinched nerve symptoms worsen in the first month or fail to resolve over a 1 to 3 month period. Such cases require additional testing such as with an M.R.I. and more invasive treatments such as epidural injections or surgery. We will make appropriate referrals in these instances. Can I see you for headache pain? Absolutely. Chiropractic along with postural/ergonomic advice is a proven approach for many headaches. Occasionally, multidisciplinary management with other specialists is required and a team approach is utilized. If I can't raise my arm overhead should I see an orthopedist? Typically, we will evaluate you and begin a manual therapy/pain management program. However, an orthopedic consultation and M.R.I. evaluation will be necessary if no progress is seen within a few week period. Muscle manipulation, gentle exercises, soft tissue massage, and heat or ice treatments are usually quite effective. If my M.R.I. shows a herniated disc can you help me? Herniated discs are very common. It has been found that they are present in people who have no symptoms - even 20 year olds! Experts now say that spinal changes such as herniated discs and arthritis are related to age (like graying hair or wrinkling skin) not symptoms. It appears that the difference between a person with a herniated disc who has no symptoms and one who has symptoms has to do with how their body is coping or stabilizing their back. At HPC, we specialize in enhancing your functional ability to stabilize your back so that the disc bulge is not as relevant. If I have had back or neck surgery can I see you post-operatively? Yes. We have seen many patients after their surgery. We work closely with each surgeon so we can forge a team approach to the timing and intensity of your rehabilitation program. Should I have decompression therapy for my back? Research has shown that decompression therapy is not as effective compared to other non-invasive approaches. According to several of the leading researchers in the world on low backs, decompression therapy is an archaic means of treatment and contains many inconsistencies in its limited research. Researchers further testify that decompression therapy focuses only on treatment of pain but does not benefit the patient in long term outcomes. Our success with treating disc herniations and low back pain are extremely high due to our ability to treat the underlying cause as well as show the patient how to avoid reoccurrences in the future. Our clinic is a diagnostic and treatment center for human performance. Our clinical goals demand more than pain relief. We work with patients to restore function, maintain proper joint mechanics, and resume daily activities-maximizing performance while minimizing risk of recurring injury and doctor visits.
NOT AT ALL! Many people are surprised to learn that most chiropractors practice differently. Based on our studies, travels and clinical research we understand that the combination of joint and muscle manipulation, rehabilitation and therapeutic exercises offers patients superior, result-oriented care. Because there were no clinics operating under this philosophy in the Ocean and Monmouth County area, we established our own.
No. Our greatest reward is returning patients to their active lifestyles in the shortest time frame possible. We base our care on the patient's individual needs and case complexity-not on predetermined treatment plans. In addition to reducing patients' tension and discomfort, we teach our patients ways to prevent this tension or injury from returning. Our active care approach requires patient participation. The closer you follow our recommendations the faster and longer you are likely to remain free of pain and enjoy maximum performance. The more compliant you are with our prescribed home treatment plan, the faster and longer you are likely to remain free of pain and enjoy maximum performance
The end of treatment is usually based on the achievement of mutual goals established by you and your doctor. In addition to achieving pain relief, we encourage our patients to focus on reaching activity and performance goals as a measurement of care completion. Why? The temporary relief of pain does not always lead to long-term success. While many of our patients enjoy immediate pain relief following a treatment, it may take a follow-up visit to completely address the dysfunction and prevent this injury or tension from recurring. Clinical research proves that our active approach to health care will lead to lasting physical improvements if performed according to your doctor's instructions. Thus, adhering to your doctor's treatment programs can prevent future office visits and costs. This is what sets us apart from other physical therapists and chiropractors.
The physicians at HPC are neuromusculoskeletal specialists. Therefore, any disorder that involves joints, muscles, discs or nerves are addressed. This includes:
Often when a joint is manipulated, it makes a "popping" sound. There is fluid inside all joints, and within this fluid there are bubbles. When the manipulation is performed, the bubbles pop, producing an audible sound. Although this is not necessary for manipulation to be effective, it is simply the sound of the joint suddenly moving or releasing from its restricted state.

Should an adjustment ever hurt?
Most chiropractic adjustments / manipulations are painless. In fact, adjustments help most patients enjoy immediate pain relief. However, if the patient has suffered from a recent injury, adjustments can sometimes cause slight discomfort as the tissues surrounding the dysfunction are usually inflamed. That is why our doctors offer a combination of muscle and joint manipulation to treat complex cases and minimize discomfort.
Not necessarily. Manipulation is a technique used to correct joint dysfunction, which is a condition in which there is loss of normal movement of a joint - a common cause of spinal pain and dysfunction. If you do not have joint dysfunction then there is no need for manipulation. Even if you do have joint dysfunction, if you’d prefer, there are "non-cracking" techniques that can be used to correct it, which are often equally effective.
This is a very commonly asked question, and unfortunately, there is no one simple answer to this because the amount of time needed for recovery is variable, not only for each different condition, but also for each individual patient. Generally speaking, conditions that have been present for a longer period of time will logically require a somewhat longer recovery time, although there are always exceptions. Our approach is such that the immediate goals are to help you get relief from pain and disability as quickly as possible, while at the same time, addressing the underlying dysfunctions that caused the pain and teaching you strategies to manage and reduce any future episodes that may occur. In this way we attempt to help you expeditiously reduce pain and return to normal function.

Although there are certain uncommon instances in which regular, periodic treatment may be recommended, this is the exception rather than the rule. There will likely be certain exercises that are recommended to you to do regularly, and these have been shown to prevent re-occurrences of back pain.

What can I expect during the first visit?
The primary purpose of the first visit is for the chiropractic physician to get to know you and your condition. He or she will ask you for certain details about the history of the problem and will perform a comprehensive examination for the purpose of establishing a diagnosis. Blood tests, MRI, CAT scan or X-rays may be ordered, although most often these are not necessary. Then, the chiropractic physician will discuss with you his or her findings and your diagnosis and, if your case is accepted, will discuss the recommended treatment(s).
Treatment may or may not be rendered on the first visit, but the full scope of the diagnosis and recommended treatment will be discussed prior to any treatment being given.
